We are reaching out to inform you of an update regarding Safe Communities, Momentum in Recovery, and the AAOC’s International Overdose Awareness Day event. The Annual International Overdose Awareness Day event typically held on August 31 faces a scheduling conflict this year due to the occasion falling on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend. Consequently, the organizers have decided not to proceed with the usual event.
Despite the cancellation of the event, efforts are still being made to honor those affected by overdose and drug poisoning. From August 20th to September 3rd, the memorial signs will be displayed at Olbrich Park along Atwood Avenue. These signs serve as an important reminder of the lives lost to overdose and drug poisoning and offer a space for reflection and remembrance. The memorial sign display will once again allow us to raise awareness and honor the significance of the day.
The decision to forgo the traditional event highlights the practical considerations involved in event planning. With International Overdose Awareness Day coinciding with a long holiday weekend, the anticipated attendance may be significantly lower than usual. Organizing such an event requires substantial resources, including time, personnel, and financial investments. In this case, the potential turnout may not justify the allocation of these resources. This led us to the decision to cancel this year’s event.
