Drug Harm Reduction & Recovery
With programs such as Peer Support and MedDrop, Safe Communities works to reduce the harm of drug use and provide resources for recovery.
Safe Communities works to reduce drug harm and improve recovery. Some of our programs and resources include:
MedDrop: A safe, secure way to dispose of unwanted medications.
Recovery Coaching: Our aspiration is by sharing our strength and courage with other people who are struggling, we are able to emphatically support those seeking recovery in making changes in their lives.
If you need immediate support please reach out to our crisis contacts.
Our peer providers bring lived experience and deep understanding to their work. Some have personal experience navigating substance use or mental health challenges, and others have been closely connected to loved ones with similar experiences. This perspective allows peers to meet people with empathy, respect, and without assumptions about goals or outcomes.
All peer providers receive specialized training through the Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) and are credentialed as Wisconsin Certified Peer Support Specialists, ensuring they are equipped to support individuals across a range of self-defined goals, including harm reduction, stability, and recovery.
Overdose Aid Kits, or O.A.K. boxes, are first-aid kits for overdose situations. Supplies are available to use in an emergency or to keep on hand for future use. They
contain naloxone (Narcan), rescue breathing masks, fentanyl test strips, instructions on how to use Narcan, and other information and resources for those
impacted by drugs.
We partner with many locations across Dane County to make O.A.K. Boxes, naloxone (narcan), and fentanyl test strips available free of charge, with no
questions asked. Our goal is to have all Dane County residents within minutes of these life saving harm reduction materials.
Safe Communities is here to support you and your loved ones in drug harm reduction and recovery. Please view our resources and crisis contacts to get the help you need.
Peer Support Services

Peer providers do not take the place of a therapist, counselor, mentor, or sponsor. They simply are the person to help individuals on their journey, who have experience with recovery and/or harm reduction, and want to be an advocate, peer, and confidante.
